The objective is to answer the questions during that time in your life. I’m going to make this into 2 different sections, one for high school and one for college.
High School: Class of 2001
- Did you know your current love? Definitely no. However, I did go to school with his cousins but we weren’t in the same circle of friends.
- Type of car? Although I got my permit at 17, I didn’t get my actual license until 27.
- Jobs? I worked 2 part time jobs during the first couple years of high school. One at a fast food joint at a mall food court and another at a printing/copy center. During my senior year, I started working in retail and at a bank.
- Were you popular? Not in terms of the kind of popularity you’d see in movies but I would say I was well known. I had many different groups of friends. Someone once said I was “the life of the party”. My parents were the cool parents and I always had house parties so I was well known for that.
- Were you in choir/band? Yes, I was in choir all 4 years. Still just an average singer, lol.
- Ever get suspended? No. I was a good kid.
- If you could, would you go back? When I was in college, I went back to my high school to do a Model UN demonstration. High school kids are awkward AF. I couldn’t believed we thought we were so cool in high school. But honestly, if I was “reborn,” I wouldn’t mind. I would concentrate more on school and less on everything else though.
- Still talk to the person you went to prom with? I’ve always been a go-getter instead of waiting for someone else to make a move. I had a male friend who sat behind me in English class. It was during prom time and so I just turned around and asked him if he wanted to go to prom with me. He was really shy but also really flattered too. He even got a tie that match my dress! He bought me a corsage and I got him a boutonniere. Afterward, one of my junior high best friends (she went to a different high school) asked me if I could ask him to go to prom with her because she thought he was really cute. I also had a few friends tell me that I always have the best looking dates. I was honestly shocked when I heard this. The guys I’ve asked to prom and various dances were usually friends of mine, nothing really romantic. I guess I was a bit flirty. Anyways, my prom date? We stayed really good friends and kept in touch in college but I’ve lost touch with him since then.
- Did you skip school? Looking back, not that often actually. I did stay home a lot (pretend to be sick) but other than that, I didn’t skip much.
- Go to all the football games? No. I only went to one, the homecoming game of my senior year. It was mandatory as a homecoming queen candidate to go so it was my first and last.
- Favorite subject? It was probably French. I was just really good at it. I honestly didn’t understand how anyone could fail at it because a second language was also a requirement for junior high so everyone who was talking French had already gone through it in junior high.
- Do you still have your yearbook? Oh my, I don’t know where they are. You know what? There was this boy I was sort of interested in. We always flirted but nothing ever came about it. He signed my yearbook my senior year and he confessed that he always thought I was cute! I was like, why couldn’t he have mentioned this earlier so we could have a high school romance, lol!
- Did you follow the “original” career path? I’m thinking they meant did I follow the traditional career path. If so, yes, I did.
- Do you still have your senior class ring? No, I did not buy a ring or a varsity jacket.
- Who was your favorite teacher? It was probably Ms. Whitney. Even though French was my favorite subject, the teacher was too high strung.
- What was your favorite style? There were so many different styles back then. I had a phase during my sophomore year where I only wore dresses. That was such a fun time! I think I dressed really well for a high school student because I worked and had my own money so I could buy whatever clothes I wanted.
- Favorite shoes? Oh my goodness. I would say they were white Skechers! I knew a guy who worked at Foot Locker and he got me a good deal on them.
- Favorite thing to eat for lunch? We couldn’t go out for lunch so from the cafeteria: chicken patty sandwich with lettuce, mayo, ketchup, and jalapenos. Baby carrots with ranch. Apple juice.
- High school hairdo? Long, straight, with blonde streaks.
- What was your favorite perfume? Davidoff Cool Water for Women
- How old when you graduated? 18
- Still friends with your high school friends? I no longer live in the area I went to high school so I don’t see many of my old friends daily but I still keep in touch loosely with a few of them on social media. A few of the girls I hung out with back then, I realized almost immediately after high school that they weren’t ride or die. I also went to school with a lot of my cousins so I see them during family events.
College: Class of 2005
- Did you know your current love? No again but I went to a conference held at his college and loved the college so much that I had even considered transferring over. If I did, we probably would have met and perhaps never married, lol.
- Type of car? Although I got my permit at 17, I didn’t get my actual license until 27.
- Jobs? In the beginning, I was still working in retail and at the bank. I ended up quitting because I took on an internship at the DOT. It was a lot of fun and it paid a lot but I had to leave the position when I went to study abroad. They were supposed to hold my position until I return but I found out a month before returning that they had to terminate the position. Afterward, I worked at the computer lab and as an assistant to one of my professors. It was the best job ever because I was able to work, do homework, and play on the computer all day. And as my professor’s assistant, I got to oversee a project where we built websites for local minority businesses.
- Were you popular? No. I mean college was such a huge place that I don’t know if there was anything like a popular crowd. I was on the student council my senior year and the president of the student body can be considered popular. He was a really nice person. I didn’t live on campus so I really didn’t pay attention.
- Were you in choir/band? No. Since I was not going to major in music, there was no reason to take choir.
- Ever get suspended? No. I did well in school.
- If you could, would you go back? I kind of want to go and get my MBA but it would be so hard to go to school again after years of working.
- Still talk to the person you went to any school dance with? Although school dances aren’t a thing in college, one of the clubs I was a part of does an annual dance as a fundraiser. I went to one with my boyfriend at the time. Fortunately, I don’t talk to him anymore.
- Did you skip school? Yes, once in a while. It is so much easier to skip in college but I wouldn’t really call it skipping. It’s more like calling in sick. Each course had a number of how many days you can be absent and I didn’t take advantage of it by the long shot.
- Go to all the football games? No. The first time I step foot in the stadium was probably for graduation.
- Favorite subject? My visual communication courses. I was so good at it and really wanted to change majors. But I listened to my father and didn’t. I’m glad though because it would have been much harder to find a job if I did.
- Do you still have your yearbook? No, we didn’t have yearbooks for college.
- Did you follow the “original” career path? I’m thinking they meant did I follow the traditional career path. If so, yes, I did.
- Do you still have your senior class ring? No.
- Who was your favorite teacher? Dr. Patton! He was so cool and I enjoyed his life lessons.
- What was your favorite style? Because I didn’t live on campus, I didn’t dress in typical campus wear (school sweatshirt and jeans). I always dressed business casual. Mainly because I had to work after school. One of my favorite outfits was a peach wrap around sweater with lace edging pair with a pair of black slacks from Express. I probably dressed better then than I do now, lol.
- Favorite shoes? I had a pair of knee-high black boots that I wore often with a skirt and sweater. Looking back, I think it was too sexy.
- Favorite thing to eat for lunch? I usually had brunch in which I would eat a sausage egg and cheese on toast sandwich. It was good. I actually made it recently and it was much richer than I remembered. I couldn’t believe I ate one almost every day in college.
- College hairdo? I kept my hair long and straight. I often went to the salon to get my hair streaked and lightened. I rarely got it layered which was popular at the time because I was low maintenance when it came to hair care.
- What was your favorite perfume? Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy
- How old when you graduated? 22
- Still friends with your college friends? Yes, I’m still friends with my two best friends from college. We haven’t lived in the same area for over a decade now and don’t always talk daily but when we do talk, we pick up where we left off. They came to visit me like 5 years ago. The rest of my crew from college, we’re on Christmas card exchange basis.
