Book Review & Summary: Same Place Not Same Bed

At only 11 chapters and 1 epilogue, this novel actually took me a while to finish. I had started reading it a few days ago but kept doing other things (like read recaps for Penthouse). This novel has been translated a while ago and I’ve had it on my to read list for some time now. I think I tried to start it several times but quickly lost interest after only a few sentences.

Our MC is Li Yongxuan, a straight-laced 29-year-old career woman. She’s an orphan and workaholic having spent the last 5 years of her life flying around the country assessing investments and writing up plans for them. She has a crush on her boss, Director Liang.

Our ML is Mai Weizhe, a 26-year-old speed skater who’s known to be arrogant, bad-tempered, and impulsive. He’s the face of a speed skating team and has lots of fans. He was raised by his paternal grandfather.

The two met when MC was auditing the sports team and center as a prospective investment for the company she works for. The ML always flirt with her. One day, her boss and crush, Director Liang decide to visit the center. ML felt very jealous because of how dazed MC was acting around the director. Director Liang asked MC out to dinner that evening. Although MC did have a crush on him, she had been spending time with ML so her feelings changed. That evening MC treated it like a business dinner where she tried to sell to her boss on investing in the sport center. Director Liang, however, treated that dinner like a date.

Later, she couldn’t find her scarf but found out that Director Liang had it so she paid him a visit to get it. He thinks she’s interested in her so he kissed her neck. She pushed him away and walked away but not before Director Liang tell her that she would regret it if she left. At the door, ML is already there and is upset at her for being stupid to pay a visit to a man’s hotel room at night but he takes her back home.

The next morning, MC wakes up to the sound of knocks at the door. She has to vacant her apartment as it is only for employees and she had been fired. She believed there might be a mistake but Director Liang’s wife shows up. She admits that she didn’t know he was married. It turns out that this is nothing new between Director Liang and his wife (who’s also one of the company’s shareholders). He’s a womanizer and countless of female employees have been fired. His wife accused MC of going to Director Liang’s hotel room and trying to sleep with him.

After MC left, she goes to the sport center to see the speed skating team. She tried to act normal around them but a few of the members picked up on MC acting strange. They tell ML who leaves an interview early to chase after her. She tells him that she was fired so he takes her home. He lives with his grandfather. His grandfather’s cooking made her cry as she’s an orphan and has never had anyone take care of her.

Despite Director Liang being married, he’s still trying to chase MC. It started with him calling MC at ML’s house and not believing that the two are living together. When ML won some gold medals, he received flowers from Director Liang with a note saying: “You can win all the medals, but she will come back to me.

ML and MC went on a vacation together after one of his competitions. They were supposed to go with his grandfather but at the last minute, he couldn’t go for health reasons. So only ML and MC went. There, ML proposed to her. He jokingly tell her that he wants to marry her so he could bully her and his grandfather said he couldn’t treat her cheaply. MC realized how much she loves him and agree. They are married by the captain of the boat who’s also a priest.

The two sleep together and the next morning, in typical ML-fashion, he asked her: “Lady, who are you?” She shyly respond that she’s his wife. LOL. What I found kind of weird is the mention that ML is 26-year-old and has the sexual energy of a man who’s age so MC who’s older need to put up with his young sexual energy. They are only 3 years apart. She’s only 29. It’s not like she’s an old woman in her 40s. Goodness!

Despite being married, ML and MC both have insecurities. In the past, when MC had brought up becoming his agent so that she could get him some endorsements, he refused. So she never brought it up again but she’s concerned about the team not having any sponsors and money to continue. Director Liang continues to harass MC, regretting letting her slip away from him. He goes so far as to divorce his wife for her apparently. ML finds out and gets upset so he goes to Director Liang’s home and punches him in the face. The next day, lawyers from Director Liang’s company appears and want him to apologize and pay compensation otherwise the company would block ML from skating. MC shows up as the team’s manager and fights back but ML is angry because he doesn’t want her to get involved and work.

His fear stems from his mother choosing her career over him. She wanted to abort him but his father and grandfather begged her not to. She gave birth to him and then left to pursue her career without looking back. He’s worried that MC would leave him if given the choice between her career or her relationship with him. The two finally talk and resolved their insecurities.

I felt like the author kept trying to portray the age difference of the MC and ML. ML is flirty towards MC and always playing around with her. He’s also very needy and clingy to her, scared that she’ll leave him. Whereas MC is much more mature.
