Book Review: The Female Supporting Character Just Wants to Live a Good Life

The book started off really boring and I had wanted to drop it many times. However, since I already started and there isn’t too many chapters, I wanted to see through it. I don’t know why but I don’t really like the layout by the translator. Before each chapter, they include all the character names that will appear both the Chinese characters, pinyin, and English translation of the name. I think it would have been helpful for a Wuxia novel but not something like this. You have to scroll down a bit for so little content (like 5 huge ads in between) because the bottom half are footnotes and the chapters are split into multi-parts too.

This is the synopsis:

This is a story of a serious girl that transmigrated into the villainess in the novel where she isn’t aware of it and plans to live well.

Su Rui thought that she had transmigrated, but who knew that this was a novel.

Su Rui thought that she is a fair, rich and pretty lady, but who knew that she is just a cannon fodder.

Su Rui thought that she has found herself a reliable marriage partner, but who knew that he was the male lead.

The MC is Su Rui. She isn’t aware that she transmigrated into a book. In fact, none of the characters realized this. Even the original female lead of said novel is someone who was reborn but also does not know that she’s the female lead of a book. This setup is more for the author to play with. [SPOILER: MC finds out in the end.]

The original Su Rui was a rebellious girl who wanted freedom so she forced her parents to send her to study abroad by attempting to commit suicide. While abroad, she met with an accident and her parents rushed to take care of her. The original Su Rui ends up actually dying and MC was able to transmigrate into her body. MC actually had a tragic past. Her father ran away with the family money, her mother took her younger brother and remarried. MC had a life-threatening disease that rendered her lying in the hospital all alone for a few years before succumbing to death. So when she wakes up in the body of the original Su Rui and find that she has a caring family, she decides to just go with it. In her previous life, MC had already lived to the age of 24 so although the original Su Rui is only 20, MC has a more mature outlook and less rebellious nature which apparently mesh well with the ML.

The ML is Gu Yu Cheng. He is your typical cold, aloof CEO with the prestigious family background. He’s 26 turning 27 and is forced to go on blind dates by his mother. Many believe that he’s remained single due to his white moonlight and is waiting for her return.

MC and ML met during a blind date. MC is very logical. She thinks that because ML participated in the blind date, he’s also looking to settle down. Thus, after their meeting, the two develop a kind of relationship that is gearing towards dating. However, one day, MC goes to ML’s workplace to help his mother deliver soup to him and overheard his employees talking about how MC is just one of many of ML’s blind dates and ML have no intention to start dating or even getting married to someone he met through a blind date. When MC confronted ML, he doesn’t deny it. So MC apologized for misunderstanding and said goodbye to him. She then proceeded to block ML’s phone number and ignored his WeChat requests. Eventually, he tracked her down at her school and told her that he did feel that way until he met her. So the two decide to take things slowly.

The romance is actually very boring. It’s like two equally qualified individuals who decide that they match and proceed to the next steps of a relationship, from getting to know each other, to dating, to getting engaged, to getting married. Even the return of Bai Xin Yu (the original female lead) was pretty uneventful for their relationship because MC trust ML.

ML’s relationship with Bai Xin Yu: ML only sees Bai Xin Yu as one of many children who lived in the same neighborhood he did growing up. Bai Xin Yu had a thing for him but it wasn’t reciprocated. When the Bai family was facing bankruptcy, Bai Xin Yu and her mother tells ML that the bankruptcy was caused by his mother who misunderstood ML’s relationship with Bai Xin Yu. However, Bai Xin Yu and her mother mislead ML’s mother and claimed that ML has a love relationship with Bai Xin Yu. This caused a rift between ML and his mother as he thinks that his mother was irrational and caused the bankruptcy for something that isn’t true and his mother think that he does have feelings for Bai Xin Yu.

The original story: Bai Xin Yu left to go abroad after her family filed for bankruptcy. She didn’t return to China until she was 36 in which an incident led her to be in the same hotel room as Gu Yu Cheng. He asked her if she wanted him to take responsibility which she agreed to. Thus, Gu Yu Cheng marries Bai Xin Yu and gave him the title of Mrs. Gu but he never touched her and hardly came back to their home. This caused Bai Xin Yu to be resentful. After her death, she made all these excuses for him saying that he didn’t do this or that to her because he respect and loved her deeply. He wasn’t home often because he was too busy building his company, etc.

Thus when Bai Xin Yu was reborn, she decided to make a name for herself and return to his side sooner (like 10 years before her last life). However, she returned and tried to hype up her relationship with ML. She didn’t think ML would mind but he was dating MC at the time and it was an extremely sensitive in their relationship (they had just gotten together again after the misunderstanding). So ML paid PR to remove the hype. He also introduced MC publicly as his girlfriend. Bai Xin Yu kind of go crazy saying that this didn’t happen in her last life. However, she assures herself that she ends up with ML.

The author had mentioned that in the original story, after MC came back to China, she had a blind date with ML but because the original Su Rui was clingy and chased after ML, he didn’t like her. Bai Xin Yu briefly mentioned that in her last life, she heard Su Rui married a business administrator from her father’s company.

The romance between MC and ML went from zero to 100 pretty quick. After dating for like 2 months, he already wanted her to move into his apartment that he keeps near her school and his company. She pushed back a little but does furniture shop with him. They then get engaged and the night of their engagement, the two sleep together. The very next day or so, they went to get their marriage certificate. He had initially said they won’t get marry until she graduates college (which was still 2 years away). But I guess after sleeping with her, he wanted to marry her so he said they can wait until after she graduates to hold the wedding ceremony. She also gets pregnant almost right away too!

The author did mentioned that she wanted to write a sweet romance that was realistic. So I guess her “realistic” is things don’t always go as planned. The novel is very much slice of life so I skimmed over a lot of unnecessary details.

While MC was pregnant, Bai Xin Yu pushed her causing her to fall. Luckily due to her maternal instinct, she protected her stomach and only bruised her knees and arms during the fall. At the time, Bai Xin Yu screamed at MC that ML belongs to her and she’s not supposed to exist. And for MC to give him back. Both MC and ML found this time very peculiar as ML has no other interaction with Bai Xin Yu. And even MC commented that as ML’s wife, even she wouldn’t claim that ML “belonged” to her. She just coughed it up as Bai Xin Yu suffering from delusion or mental illness.

After giving birth, MC fell into a coma where she dreamt about her past life in intricate details. She then remembered that she had read a book where the female protagonist is named Bai Xin Yu and the male protagonist has the same name as ML. She realized that she transmigrated into a novel and is a minor character. So when she wakes up, she wants nothing to do with ML. However, after thinking about it some more, she decides that the ML of the book is not the same as her ML.

During Bai Xin Yu’s trial, she was able to meet privately with her. When Bai Xin Yu asked if she was reborn, she didn’t deny it. The story had some epilogues about their child and it looks like the ML transmigrate but I stopped reading.
