Book Review: Time

I was very interested in this novel as it’s supposed to be similar to Love O2O. At only 20 chapters, I was excited to start reading it. I believed I started reading it back in 2019 but the original translator dropped it. It was picked up and recently completed just a few days ago.

A few things to note before I begin: although it’s only 20 chapters, it felt very long due to how the translators split up the chapters (anywhere from 3-8 parts). There are some uses of cultural phrases so the translator had to explain them. I’m not really sure how I feel about it.

The MC is Yao Yuan. She’s 25-26 years old and is working as a university teacher after returning from getting her post-graduate degree abroad. MC is an orphan. Her parents died in a car accident when she was only 8 years old. She was then raised by her grandmother. Because she was a good student, she was able to go to school due to scholarship. In her free time, she plays an online game with her cousin. Her cousin is the guild leader of their guild.

The ML is Jiang An Lan. He’s 3 years older than MC and is the CEO of a company he started with his maternal cousin. He was sickly growing up so he choose to stay in the city that his mother was from. His mother past away when he was younger and his father remarried and live abroad. He went to the same college as MC but when she was a freshman, he was already a senior. He also plays the same online game as MC and has been searching for her. When he found her, he trapped her into marrying him online.

When they were in college, MC had actually saved ML. She took him to the hospital and paid for his medical bills. He searched for her and when he found her, he overheard her telling people that she didn’t know him. Upset, he walked away from her but had been thinking about her ever since.

When the two finally meet in real life, she does recognize him as someone she went to school with. However, she had saved him a second time (after college and before they reunited) but she didn’t recognize him then.

ML also discovered that his uncle was the person who killed MC’s parents in the car accident. This lead to the breakup of the couple for some time. Eventually, they reconciled.

I’m really surprised on how accepting both sides of the family are. ML’s family is rich and affluent and there were mentions that MC would not be able to marry ML. However, the patriarch of the family (ML’s grandfather) loves ML the most and let him do whatever he wants (even allowing ML to change his surname). So despite opinions from an aunt, MC is pretty much accepted as their future granddaughter-in-law. Likewise, even though MC’s parents’ car accidents were caused by ML’s uncle, all her family could express is how lucky MC is to be with someone as handsome as ML.

Back to ML changing his surname. So when MC broke up with him because his uncle was the person who caused her parents to die, ML decide that he’s going to change his surname to his mother’s surname. He’s going to disassociate himself from the Jiang surname as not to be related to his uncle. When he brought it up to his father, he refused and told ML that it won’t make a difference. It won’t changed the fact that his uncle is his uncle. I agree with ML’s father on this. I found this whole changing the surname to add nothing of value to the story. I guess it’s supposed to show that ML was willing to do anything to be with MC.

MC and ML are both described as being very handsome and beautiful. However, we don’t get to meet many love rivals. On MC’s side, there’s an old classmate who’s interested in her. They reunited and he asked her if she’s single. She responded that she’s married (at the time, it was only in the game). He doesn’t believe her and stopped by her house when he was nearby but unfortunately for him, ML happened to have slept over. On ML’s side, there were a few girls online who was jealous of MC for being able to marry ML but there weren’t much drama.

Honestly, I’m unsure how I feel about this novel. We know why ML chased after her and he’s very upfront about his feelings for her. But the whole time, she seems unwilling to be with him. But after she dumped him, she starts to miss him and then agreed to get back together. To be honest, I almost dropped this after Ch 17. But there were only 3 chapters left so I forced myself to finish. Even after ML proposed, MC still seems unwilling. I don’t understand. Was this to show how pure MC was? Also, MC and ML were cohabiting and slept in the same bed for half a year but nothing happened between them. MC would often sleep in his arms but after they got engaged, he would sleep with his back towards her as not to be tempted.
