The novel had 50-ish chapters that the translator split in 2-3 sections so it was a good, short breather as I’m still trudging through Cultivating in the Entertainment Industry.
Our MC is Wan Wan, a fox demon who had been cultivating for 500 years. She ended up dying during her immortal tribulation from the thunder strikes. She then transmigrated into the body of Xu Wan Zhi, a cannon fodder from a novel she read previously. When she woke up, she’s being pinned down by Mu Xi Yuan, the half brother of Mu Zhen Yu (the original novel’s villain but this novel’s ML).
In the original novel that Wan Wan read, the main character is Liang Zhi Quan. She had been betrothed to Mu Zhen Yu since birth. But in college, she fell in love with the male lead, Qin Sheng. The two dated and only broke up when Qin Sheng left overseas to study abroad. When the Liang family was facing bankruptcy, Liang Zhi Quan went back to Mu Zhen Yu to follow through with their engagement so that the Mu family can save the Liang family. Mu Zhen Yu refused. Mu Zhen Yu hired an 18th tier actress, Xu Wan Zhi to be his contract girlfriend for 6 months. After 6 months, she would then get 50 million yuan. When Qin Sheng found out about Liang Zhi Quan’s troubles, he left his studies immediately and came back to save Liang Zhi Quan. Qin Sheng found an angel investor and his business started booming. His company then bankrupted Mu Zhen Yu’s company. In the original novel, Xu Wan Zhi was a gold digger. When she found out that Mu Zhen Yu’s company was bankrupted, she backstabbed him by sleeping with half-brother Mu Xi Yuan, hoping to marry into the rich family. Mu Zhen Yu found out and tortured her leading to her eventual death.
Luckily for our MC, she transmigrated right when Mu Xi Yuan was pinning her down. She knew that the ML would be walking through the door soon. As Mu Xi Yuan is kissing her, she takes his yang essence. He hid her in the bedroom while he goes to open the door for ML. When ML and Mu Xi Yuan went to look for her, they couldn’t find her at all. As ML is about to leave, he sees a white baby fox by the door wanting him to pick her up. So he picks her up and brought her back home with him.
Because MC is a fox demon, she retains some of her abilities. But she cannot do magic around ML because he has a pure yang essence. So if she transform to her fox form, she has to wait until he’s far away from her before she can transform back into her human form.
MC doesn’t want to be tortured and died like the novel’s original Xu Wan Zhi so she sets out to help Mu Zhen Yu because in the original novel, he makes a comeback. Although they have a contract relationship, ML starts developing feelings for her because he notices that she’s not the same Xu Wan Zhi as before. He does start to suspect that she and the little fox are one in the same and is not phase by it at all. MC, on the other hand, just want to make it through the 6 months contract with him and then get her freedom back.
Xu Wan Zhi has a father who opposed to her joining the entertainment industry. He likes to gamble and will only contact Wu Xan Zhi if he needs money. About 2 years old, he had her drugged and sent to the Chen family to Chen Yi. Chen Yi is a big actor and became a co-star with her in a movie she was filming. He also starts developing feelings for her. MC has no idea what happened between them 2 years ago. She finally finds out that she was sent to Chen Yi and he sent her home afterward but before that, some explicit photos were taken with her nearly naked and being groped by other men. Chen Yi’s cousin Chen Jin is jealous of MC and so she was able to steal these photos from Chen Yi’s phone (when she got him drunk). She sold them to Qin Sheng and together they exposed MC. However, MC is not a magical fox demon for nothing. She used this to prove that the retina scan software developed by Qin Sheng’s company have many flaws. His software showed that the person in that photo is indeed her but the other 4 retina scan software used (including ML’s software) proved that the person in the photo is not her (she magically changed her retina). This caused Qin Sheng’s company stock to decreased in value and leading to his company’s downfall. We also find out later that the angel investor is a friend of ML. They purposely bankrupted ML’s company and used the funds to invest in Qin Sheng’s company because ML did not want to marry Liang Zhi Quan. But Qin Sheng became greedy and so they couldn’t let him survive.
ML has a sad background and honestly, I cried for him a bit. He’s the eldest son of the Mu family. While his paternal grandfather was sick in the hospital, his father took the money and went on vacation with his mistress and their son (Mu Xi Yuan). ML was then kidnapped and they asked for a ransom. When they called ML’s father, he tells them that their lying to him and that his son (Mu Xi Yuan) is already next to him. Because ML’s father took the money, the Mu family didn’t have any to pay for the ransom. His mother ended up dying in a car accident as she went around asking for help/money. And his grandfather ends up dying thereafter. ML survived because he killed his kidnappers. Later, he was able to prove that this was all the work on his father’s second wife (Mu Xi Yuan’s mother). The second wife ends up in prison. When ML’s father finds out that Mu Xi Yuan is not actually his son and he has been raising someone else’s bastard, he had his people “kill” the second wife in prison. Knowing this would happen, Mu Xi Yuan kidnapped MC hoping to lead him to them and have him killed. MC was able to escape and as she pushed ML down to shield him, she turned into her fox form. ML fought the assassins with one hand while holding MC in her sleeping fox form in the other.
MC (in her fox form) slept for 2 days. She’s unable to turn back but thinking that she saved the ML, she let herself be taken care of and spoiled by ML. She then caught a news clip and saw that after she thought she saved him, he was still fighting his assassins while holding onto her. She used all her cultivation to turn back into a human. But that meant that she could no longer turn into a fox anymore.
